IKEA Cheras

IKEA Cheras

In 2012, IKEA released an ambitious global sustainability strategy: People & Planet Positive. This is part of IKEA Groups long term sustainability and growth strategy, which includes some of the following key commitments:

Removing all single use plastic products from the IKEA range globally and from customer and co-worker restaurants in stores by 2020.
Designing all IKEA products with new circular principles, with the goal to only use renewable and recycled materials.
Becoming climate positive and reducing the total IKEA climate footprint by an average of 70% per product.
Achieving zero emission home deliveries by 2025.
100% renewable energy source by 2020.

In line with this global sustainability strategy, IKEA Cheras designers had the following sustainable design targets:
1. First store in Malaysia to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold
2. First store in Malaysia to achieve Green Building Index (GBI) Gold
3. First retail building in Malaysia to win the prestigious ASEAN Energy Award for Green Building – Large Building Category
4. Reduce energy consumption by 30% (by store area) compared to IKEA Damansara
5. Reduce water consumption by 50% compared to IKEA Damansara

IKEA Cheras, located at Jalan Cochrane, Kuala Lumpur, was the 2nd IKEA Store to open in Malaysia, after IKEA Damansara. The store was completed in 2015 and opened for business in November 2015.

With clear and measurable sustainable design and construction goals as a key agenda throughout the design and construction process, IKEA Cheras has become the first IKEA Store in the world to achieve both Green Building Index (GBI) Malaysia Gold final certification as well as LEED GOLD certification.

With the effort put in by related stakeholders, IKEA Cheras became the most energy efficient IKEA store in South East Asia. In the process of this optimization, owner has been able to reduce their energy cost by more than RM1mil per year.

Innovative Sustainability Features

Increased access to daylight and view-out to the external environment from within the store. This was achieved through strategic placement of skylights at the warehouse and green house.
Sufficient outdoor air for ventilation for all enclosed occupied spaces. Additionally, outdoor air supply is modulated whenever occupancy is low in order to reduce energy consumption
Use of better performance external glazing – this helps reduce the sensation of radiated heat occupants would feel when seated close to any window.
LED lighting system throughout entire store, including car park areas. Energy efficient LED lighting not only reduced direct energy usage for lighting but also reduced the cooling demand on the air conditioning system. We were also careful to design the electric lighting to achieve the required illuminance (brightness) level while not overlighting. Overlighting translates to using more energy for lighting than necessary.
Lights in office, greenhouse and warehouse that are automatically controlled by photo sensors (which reacted to how bright it is outside) and occupancy sensors.
A 1.0MW peak capacity Solar PV system is installed on the roof top which was then the largest installation by a commercial building for self-consumption. This Solar PV system offsets about 9-10% of the total energy used by the store.
Energy metering and a central energy management system which allows tracking of the trending of various energy usage within the building.
Proper commissioning and fine tuning of the building energy systems to achieve the design intentions and to achieve best energy efficiency.
IKEA Cheras store uses about 50% less water than the previous IKEA store in Malaysia. This is achieved by collecting and reusing of rainwater to be used for irrigation and toilet flushing as well as using low flow fixtures at toilets – including lower flow basing taps and dual flush WC.
Car parking guidance systems for the 2 levels of car parking, this is expected reduce time and fuel wasted while cars circulate the car park in search for an empty lot
