YB Nik Nazmi's climate crisis analogy when speaking at the launch of his book "Saving the Planet: Climate and Environmental Lessons from Malaysia and Beyond".
The Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, also emphasised that compelling story telling is essential to engage and sway the public about the importance of Climate Change. Hence, his 'house on fire' analogy. Notably, in the foreword of the book, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim writes that "sustainability is at the centre of the Unity Government's agenda for Malaysia" and "we have not a moment to lose".
Those are the words, now it's time for action.....
As evident from the above graph, Malaysia's recent switch from a relative greenhouse gas emissions reduction target (emissions per GDP) to adopting an absolute zero greenhouse gas emissions target at 2050 requires significant actions on the ground. Business as usual is no longer an option.
IEN was glad to hear that the YB Nik Nazmi remains an optimist with respect to using our "window of opportunity" to act on climate change before it is too late. He stressed, however, that it requires all of us to do our part including and not least for the leaders across the World to muster the political will. He used the famous Mahatma Gandhi quote "The world has enough for everyone's needs, but not everyone's greed" to highlight the change in mindset that is needed.
